Via narrates the epic and distressing tales of the Italian emigrants who went to work in the Belgian coal mines. It recounts post-war Italy, the pacts between the nascent Republic and Belgium, emigrants locked up in cargo trains and transported like animals, the back-breaking work in the mines and the Marcinelle tragedy. The drama is based on family memories. The stories told by the grandparents and parents were traced in the recollections of the widows and miners who returned to Italy, poignant dialogues that offer a harrowing and detailed reconstruction of the events.
